Rule Breakers Have Better Style

You can always tell the difference between people who don’t care about “rules” the fashion world sets for us and those who do. Those who don’t have their own approach. They take what they love and twist it to make it fit their style, not the other way around. Let’s take a simple grey tee. Most would just wear it with a pair of jeans or shorts with some basic shoes. Now see the girls below and tell me what the difference is?

The first thing I notice is the mixing of fabrics and patterns. Then you look a little closer notice all the details. There is just enough but nothing is over the top. There is not a single piece that over powers another, they are just used only to highlight. Lastly, the fit on everyone is perfect. The skirt isn’t too tight, the tees are baggie enough but not sloppy and the shoes work perfectly with the pants chosen.

Be True To Who You Are
Embrace what you like and don’t like. If you don’t like a trend, don’t wear it. If you love the eclectic style of Solange but feel like a clown when you dare to mimic her style, don’t do it. Your personal style is all about what works well for you and most importantly what you feel the most comfortable wearing. There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable in your own clothes.
Focus On Fit
Whether it costs $10 or $1000 if the fit is off, the price or brand do not matter. Figure out what works for your body shape and size. Then buy the right clothes to accentuate what you love and hide what you don’t.
Don’t Become The Trend
While it’s good to incorporate the latest styles into your wardrobe, it’s not good to become a walking trend. Stay modern and fresh but incorporate your own twist. If you simply follow the trend, you’ll probably look like millions of others who are following the same one.
Quality Over Quantity
Why buy one item if you could get three or four items for the same price? Well, because of quality. It’s easy to get caught up in more is always better but buying quality items lasts and eventually saves you more money in the long run. When shopping, focus on purchasing items that you can live in, opposed to those that will ruin after the first two or three washes.

Experiment

Learn what works for your body (and your mood). The fashion industry is going to try to tell you that if you have a certain “body type,” some things are going to look better than others. This doesn’t always hold true, because your body’s type is simply that: a body. Mix and match different trends until you find what you feel you’re best in. That’s what will make you look your best. One rule does not work for every body of that shape every time.

Style is Individuality

Fashion is the thing people send down the runway in patented “looks” — the same looks that are then lobbed onto models in glossy magazines to the mannequins. Style, on the other hand, is an expression of who you are and how you live. It’s how you incorporate these runway looks into your own look. Don’t let other people make those decisions for you.

Transition Pieces

Because who really has the time, money, or effort to buy a whole new wardrobe every season? If you can re-purpose a ‘summer’ piece for the winter (and the months in between), you get much more bang for your buck. The best articles of clothing transcend the seasons and hey, if you want to wear that tropical flower-print dress with a few warmer layers in the dead of January, who’s stopping you? (No one, that’s who.)

Trends Start Somewhere

In this day and age, technology makes everything so very accessible that it’s not farfetched to think that you could be the next style star if you really wanted to be. And rather than those who are replicas of the next person, the people who get noticed are the ones that stand out from the crowd. You’re an individual from the get-go; what you wear should reflect that.

Trial and Error

There’s always that odd fashion rule that winds up being for your own good. (I’m talking flesh-colored underwear with sheer clothing) And it’s tough to hear, but sometimes you really do learn these things the hard way. Taking risks and bending rules can backfire every now and again, but this is how you learn what your personal style boundaries are.

There are a lot of rules to follow and it gets a little overwhelming. But personal style should be fun, not scary! We all make a lot of fashion faux pas but we learn from them and grow into our own! So, comment below and tell me all about YOUR style! I can’t wait to hear it!

Until next time loves,
