If a picture isn’t posted to Instagram, did it really happen?

We live in a fast paced world, where people can get a hold of you at any time  and instant gratification isn’t fast enough. There was a time when you remembered peoples birthdays, telephone numbers and your address book wasn’t attached to an iPhone. The entertainment we had at dinner was our parents challenging us to a quick game of Tick-Tack-Toe on the back of the place-mat. Lately I’ve been feeling that our life’s worth is measured by the likes you get and kind comments received. Are you any less loved by the people around you because you had 20 less notification on your birthday then last year? Are your friends better then mine because of the amount of social media traffic we have together? But what I think it comes down to is Buzzfeed the new Byron?

This to me, is the most important because social media allows us to be perceived in a light that we want others to see. Think of anyone who is a social media junkie or honestly just has a Facebook and the life that they depict on Facebook and Instagram (to name a few). Ok, now think about the life that you know they really live. This mask that warps the reality around us but we enjoy wearing it.

This is an avenue to relationships too. PicStiches of #tbt from college or long posts to your significant other- are created for no other reason than they want people to see it, comment on it, like it. People put their best selfie forward. What everyone doesn’t see is the Wizard of Oz, you know, the man behind the curtain running the whole smoke and mirrors act. The real life drama and arguments are buried deep underground. This can have people question their own relationships and worry that theirs isn’t as perfect and prim. This perception has created relationships that don’t really exist.

Passive Aggressive Posting

No. Step away from Facebook! Don’t do this, it’s tacky, and no lover is going to love that you just dished all of your nonsense to the entire inter-web to read and gawk over. It makes issues worse while creating new ones. Your friends aren’t that dumb to not know what’s happening. Tweeting or posting statuses like “I just hate when people act like that” or passive aggressive lyrics like your 13 just isn’t how to handle your issues.

A relationship is private and creates a special bond between you and another person. Trust and love are main ingredients, matching profile pictures does not a relationship make. Instead we see people turn to the masses of social media instead of their rock when times are tough. I don’t know if it’s a matter of justification or feeling better about yourself but we are turning away from the several close people who love us, to hear the thoughts of people who really don’t care.

Constant “fun” status and picture uploads detailing the lives of those around you can make anyone feel slighted by the social media gods. It happens at the blink of an eye. You are sitting waiting to be called in for your eye appointment and you start flipping through Facebook. A post catches your eye. In a few short moments you become a terrible green-eyed monster of jealousy. You can’t move on because the thoughts surround this post have consumed you. You compare your life to everyone around you and come up with the only logical explanation, your life is THE WORST. Your ‘friends’ have all of these great things happen to them and what do you have today?

Another Facebook friend got engaged while you still get the dreaded “your next” at every family event. Someone ran in a really cool race and they got some amazing pictures because they’re so in shape. These days, appearance is everything. People are more concerned validation from the rest of the world that they’re having fun, than actually enjoying themselves.

Brag Culture

If someone buys you flowers you have to take a picture and upload it to all social media platforms. After all, what is the point of being happy if not everyone knows about it? The fact of the matter is, brag culture has resulted in us being too busy narrating our lives online that we’re forgetting to live them. Reminincing isn’t looking at the pictures you looked good in, it’s the long nights of dancing, hanging out with friends or experiencing something new.

I love photography and documenting the details of my life. But I hate when I become consumed with the digital world then the people around me. I hate when my friends and I can’t even have a conversation because someone is interrupted with a text. I am pro-selfie but there is a time and a place for everything. I personally need to start focusing in on the people around me and get my fucking face out of my phone.

Likes = Love

Followers give you likes and the joining of the two (likes and followers) gives you a status in the social media world we all love to hate. Every time I open my Facebook app people are having an amazing time, somewhere, exotic, not in Pennsylvania. I am pretty sure a friend of mine doesn’t actually work he just travels and makes me feel bad about myself!

Every picture that we post is the best of the umpteenth ones we hated and looked ugly in. We chose the best pose, lighting and filter to represent us.

The same goes for friends. When I first had Facebook it was an unstated competition to see who had the most friends. You worried if someone didn’t post on your wall. I must admit that I really no longer care about my “friends” on social media and if they decide to “unfriend” me. I have to be honest, I don’t care that the frat boy I met at PSU once got a new car or that girl in my business group broke up with her boyfriend.

Now this isn’t everyone because a lot my friends aren’t on Facebook or don’t have an Instagram. This is just a part of my life that at times I feel completely consumed by. I don’t know why any of it matters to me but I feel like need to be accepted by social media, the same way I wanted the popular kids to ask me to sit with them in 8th grade. Comment below I would love to hear your thoughts! Especially if you think a lifestyle blogger shouldn’t be writing such articles.

Until next time.

Wedding Hair: Pixie Edition

Michelle Williams said it best, “I feel like myself with short hair.” It defines me and it shows my personality. Wedding season is upon us and what better way for a bridesmaid to show her personality then her hair style!

So I began my search, what seems every August, for wedding hair! Last August I was in a wedding where I had a simple bob and could wear really any traditional up-do. This year it is a little different (no pun intended). So I began looking around different sites and let me tell you it is not ease to find pixie STYLES! I don’t want a headband in I want an updo. I still have hair so let’s make it awesome. I don’t care if I go as traditional as Twiggy or I come out looking like Rufio, I just want to look fierce. So these are my personal favorites of pixies up-dos!

What one should I wear for my upcoming bridesmaid debut? Comment below!

My Most Versitile Cut Yet: The Pixie

“All I want is a mohawk!”

I would say it over and over as I say in my stylist’s chair. I would look at my what seemed to me as a dull cut that came to the tops of my shoulders, and panic at the thought of change. I was scared at how I would be perceived by people around me, because honestly people want to look like Halle Berry not Miranda from Sex and the City.

My hair isn’t my favorite attribute. Color treated since the time of highlighting caps, thin and frizzy. I worked with what I had for years. Tons of trial and error but I wanted something more. I wanted to hone in on my personal style, I knew it would be difficult but exciting. Difficult in the sense that I would need to take my insecurities and wear them on my sleeve but exciting because I can now have my mohawk! No more hiding behind hair.

Leah, my hairdresser, is fabulous and daring. I showed her a few ideas of what I had in mind and next thing I new my little ponytail was in my hand. My stomach dropped like I just got off a terrifying roller-coaster but once I left that salon I felt ready to take on anyone or anything.

An article I wrote a few months back takes you through my daily thoughts. As I work with the style more and more I feel this wave of fierceness take over.  I went from never curling or styling my hair to wearing a Pompadour. There are days when I get a negative reaction from someone that turns my whole demeanor around and I want to crawl in a hole until my hair grows but then I remind myself that everyone has an opinion and it’s up to me to choose who to listen to.

Overall, I have learned a lot about myself. It’s weird that a change as simple as ridding the hair on your head can help a person boost their confidence. Every now and then though, I need to look at girls with the same style and remind myself that I am just as fabulous!

So here are some of my favorite styles and the reasons I chopped it off!

Something Is Missing: 30 Reasons to Accessorize

The details make an outfit. From a few rings to a statement necklace, an outfit isn’t complete until you add the details. Bigger isn’t always better. Sometimes a minimal necklace with a pair of studs adds the perfect touch. You don’t always need to look like Iris Apfel but you don’t need to follow Chanel’s take a piece off rule either. Personally I love anything that shows off my collarbone and adds to a shirt, especially if it has a low neckline.

We can move on to an underrated accessory, earrings. Statement earrings took the world by storm when J Crew released some of the most magnificent pairs I have ever seen. Earrings make me feel elegant, especially when my hair is done, because it draws the eye right to the collarbone.

And finally I never ignore my wrists! Half the time my watches don’t have a working battery in them but I still wear them because I love how they add just a little something, especially the ever popular men’s style for women. Sometimes I only throw on a watch and others I come out looking like a gypsy.

So here are the 30 reasons
you should always accessorize:

Mani Pedi Polish Pairings

I love a good mani/ pedi after work and recently I noticed a few friends rocking miss matched polishes. I loved the idea of it so I went to get my nails done and stood there thinking of different color combos. So I decided to share some of my personal favorites with you.

So what do you think about the mismatched polishes? Something you’ve tried or you think you’ll take the traditional route and match your fingers to your toes? Comment below I’d love to hear more!

The Cross Body is My Perfect Purse

I always feel hindered when I’m carrying a heavy purse or when I have no pockets and my phone is in my hand. I’m down an arm and that makes for difficult time. Whether it’s a night out or running around with friends, I always make sure that I carry a bag that is low maintenance.

I don’t want to be dancing and having to worry about where I can safely leave my purse. I also hate when you’re at a work event and your heavy bag is in the way. I constantly am switching my purse between hands while shifting my glass of wine all to make sure that my right hand is available to those who need to shake it.

The struggle is real for this fashionista. So today I write to you all about my favorite accessory, the cross-body. This adorable bag allows for both hands to be accessible just in case Shout comes on or you need to have two drinks in your hand. Below are some of the cutest bags I could find, UNDER $50!

My 3 Month Shopping Ban

I’ve always identified myself as an emotional shopper. I enjoy buying things  and sometimes I shop when I don’t need to. It is my reward system after a hard week or celebration after whatever accomplishment I choose to celebrate. I love the rush of going into Target and seeing what new styles adorn their racks. I noticed my  budget had taken a dip from things around the house, like a fence, and from impromptu trips to the mall. I needed to get back on track.

I noticed I would just buy things to buy them. I would have a few shirts at $20 a shirt that I would wear once and in a few months time I would come to hate it. I buy things for no reason at all. Instead when I end up going to a bigger mall like King of Prussia or Short Hills, I wish I had save that $100 I spent on those shirts I never wore to put it towards something I really wanted. I realized I derailed a bit and I needed to get myself back to buying things that I needed or truly did want.

For three months I’ll be taking on a personal challenge of not shopping. No searching the internet for new dresses, no popping into Zara to look at the handbags and no searching around and filling my cart up with nonsense. I’ve read about other bloggers giving up for an entire year but I couldn’t ever do it, I probably should but I’m finding that my wardrobe has major holes in in. I’m missing staple pieces in my closet that I wish I had more of. Instead  I have three of the same shirt from Gap. I need a detox from shopping, I’m sick of buying just to buy.

So here are the rules I set for myself:

I’m allowed to shop for:

  • groceries
  • puppy food
  • cosmetics (basics, like mascara, if I run out *I won’t*)
  • toiletries (toothpaste, toilet paper, medicine)
  • cleaning products
  • gifts
  • Potentially a pair of running shoes (right now I’m alright but I’m thinking they’ll become a necessity in the near future)

And I’m NOT allowed to shop for:

  • “fun” cosmetics (like the 20 lipsticks I wore once)
  • clothes (including workout gear)
  • shoes (sans the running kicks)
  • accessories- necklaces, rings, headbands
  • household items (candles, decor) girlfriend needs a detox on BBW
  • electronics and appliances

I am excited about this challenge I really hope to learn more about my style and to save money! Have you done a shopping ban before? Did you enjoy it or will it never happen again? Comment below I’d love to hear more!

Make It Two

I can’t get enough of this summer’s fashion, I’ll call it “the summer of tummies”. Everywhere I turn we’re baring our midriff and I’m loving every bit of it. The break in fabric adds the perfect amount of sass to an outfit and designers aren’t stopping there because the amazing floral and patterns are incredible. Perfect for a night out, bachelorette party and even just a Friday night dinner, these two-piece beauties would be a perfect addition to any wardrobe.

It’s Mint To Be

Mint took the fashion world by storm in 2013 and became ridiculously popular over a few short months. Before the color craze I saw a girl in Boston wearing the cutest outfit that included mint jeans. I had to have them, so I set off on a quest to find my latest obsession. I’ll never forget walking into J. Crew and asking if they had mint jeans, the girls looked at me like I had 3 heads. Fast forward a year and mint is everywhere!

Now we have figured out and honed in on our mint skills. I am loving this summers pieces plus this dress that I bought in early spring from Tobi that I’ll be debuting soon at a bachelor party!

We are successfully taking this once childish color and turning it into something wonderful. So ladies get shopping! I want to see your minty style!
